Traditional practices continue to thrive over modern trends, with family meals, the 12 grapes, turrón, gift-giving, and decorating the Christmas tree being key elements of the festivities. For 67% of Spaniards, festive cuisine is the cornerstone of a perfect Christmas.

Turrón, a traditional Spanish sweet, plays a special role in the holiday season. Made from almonds, honey, sugar, and egg whites, this hard nougat is a symbol of Christmas in Spain. Its origins trace back centuries, influenced by Arabic culinary traditions. Many view the arrival of turrón on supermarket shelves as the unofficial start of the season, alongside other iconic treats like polvorones and mantecados.

The study also highlighted Roscón de Reyes and turrón as the most beloved holiday desserts. These treats are more than just culinary delights—they are steeped in family tradition, embodying the spirit of Christmas.

Family meals, chosen by 56% of respondents as the most cherished tradition, bring generations together to celebrate. Ham, seafood, and turrón are seen as indispensable for creating a festive atmosphere. Regional customs also add to the richness of the season, from the Tió de Nadal in Catalonia to the Olentzero in the Basque Country. The 12 grapes remain a nationwide favorite, especially for welcoming the New Year.

In the Basque Country, family meals hold the most importance, while in Madrid, New Year's Eve is the highlight for 51% of residents. Meanwhile, Galicians are the least likely to prioritize decorating trees and lights, with only 35% considering it essential.

When asked what best represents the essence of Christmas, over half of Spaniards chose turrón and mantecados as the essentials they’d send to another planet. These iconic sweets evoke the warmth and connection that define the season, symbolizing home and holiday spirit no matter where you are.

This enduring culinary tradition continues to unite families across Spain, ensuring that the magic of Christmas remains alive for generations to come.
